    Originating in the 1500s, this vintage cut features a flat base with a domed top that resembles the petals of a rosebud. It was popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras when the primary sources of light were candles and then gas lights, which were perfectly romantic for this mostly transparent gem.
    Cut by hand at a time when tools were not as advanced, the rose cut tops off at 25 facets. It offers a soft luster rather than a reflective sparkle. And because the cut is flat on the bottom with no carat weight below the girdle, the domed surface appears larger than it is.
